Monday Moan: Get rid of GED test?

Submitted by editor on Sun, 05/19/2013 - 23:27

The Associated Press report: Some state dropping GED as test price spikes:
Several dozen states are looking for an alternative to the GED high school equivalency test because of concerns that a new version coming out next year is more costly and will no longer be offered in a pencil and paper format. The responsibility for issuing high school equivalency certificates or diplomas rests with states, and they've relied on the General Education Development exam since soon after the test was created to help returning World War II veterans.

Racism, greed responsible for spate of school, city failures

Submitted by editor on Sat, 05/18/2013 - 00:23

ACHTUNG: This is not a "fair and balanced" story. It is an editorial by the editor.

I was both saddened and outraged by the news that a once-proud high school I covered as a journalist for seven and a half years will close its doors because it doesn’t have enough money to operate any more.

Inquiring minds want to know

Submitted by editor on Sun, 05/12/2013 - 20:31

ACHTUNG: This is not a "fair and balanced" story. It is an editorial by the editor.

It certainly was encouraging to learn that Michigan State Police from the Wayland post may have in custody the car thief and car burglar who has been plaguing Wayland City and Leighton Township lately.

Monday Moan: Why Johnny's grades are bad

Submitted by editor on Sun, 05/12/2013 - 18:10

We’re well into May now, and at Wayland High School, that means the seniors are counting down the days. For them, starting in August or September it’s the “last” of everything. The last-first day of school. The last homecoming. The last prom. The last parent-teacher conference.

And speaking of those conferences, about the same time that I saw the sign at the high school and middle school announcing “Parent-Teacher Conference” I saw a cartoon being passed around on Facebook.

Dorr Twp. coup complete: Supervisor is one of 'them'

Submitted by editor on Thu, 05/09/2013 - 23:34

ACHTUNG: This is not a "fair and balanced" story. It is an editorial by the editor.

I am a fool, a bozo, an idiot. My wakeup call has come too late.
I hereby apologize to all who read this web site that I was so naïve as to fail to see the connection between newly-appointed Dorr Township Supervisor Jeff Miling and the nefarious, ill-fated, ill-conceived recall movement a couple of years ago against the Dorr Township Board.

Dorr Twp. Board must deal with 'Elephant in the Room'

Submitted by editor on Thu, 05/09/2013 - 00:08

ACHTUNG: This is not a "fair and balanced" news story. It is an editorial by the editor.

I wish new Dorr Township Supervisor Jeff Miling a lot of luck in his new job. He certainly will need it.
The Dorr Township Board is the most dysfunctional municipality in West Michigan, and it all stems from what I call the “Elephant in the Room” that was present during Wednesday night’s meeting to choose the new supervisor.
Let me put this as plainly as I can. The “Elephant in the Room,” which everybody on the board willfully ignored so as not to offend anyone, is the ill-fated recall of 2011.

Monday Moan: Commodifying education

Submitted by editor on Sun, 05/05/2013 - 20:18

By Jeff Salisbury
Detroit News report: Snyder defends secret project to reform education system
“Gov. Rick Snyder on Friday defended his administration's involvement in a secret project that is trying to develop a cheaper way to deliver public education through a voucher-like funding system.

Evidence still piling up on benefits of shopping local

Submitted by editor on Fri, 05/03/2013 - 23:59

ACHTUNG: This is not a "fair and balanced" story. It's an editorial by the editor.

Though we’re told we should support local businesses by doing business with them as much as possible, too many of us don’t for one reason — money.
We give in to the seductive serenades of big-time retailers such as Wal-Mart, Meijer, Menard’s and the mall and buy stuff there on weekends. Our behavior is a lot like the biblical account of Eve and that snake who persuaded her and Adam to take a bite out of that apple. But we rationalize that we’re being frugal in spending our hard-earned money.

Dorr Twp. in the Twilight Zone

Submitted by editor on Wed, 05/01/2013 - 00:01

ACHTUNG: This is not a "fair and balanced" story. It is an editorial by the editor.

The Dorr Township Supervisor interviews special meeting Monday was one of the most bizarre I’ve witnessed in my career. Its fallout has even more surprises, even for the usually sporting and unpredictable Dorr Township Board.
Quoting the late, great Rod Serling, host of the Twilight Zone, “Submitted for your approval:”
